Your Expert in All Matters of Inheritance

A long-standing client of the firm often responds to the idealised portrayal of harmonious family relations with: "Have you ever inherited together?"

In the realm of inheritance law, G.E. Lessing's quote, "People rarely appear as they are, and they are rarely better," holds particular significance. Even in seemingly harmonious family situations, joint inheritance can lead to disagreements.

For over 30 years, this experience has been repeatedly confirmed. As a solicitor specialising in inheritance law in Berlin, I provide comprehensive advice and representation to heirs, co-heirs, individuals entitled to a compulsory portion, and legatees.

I take care of all aspects of the inheritance process in Germany – professionally and reliably. From clarifying your rights and obligations, to preparing legal documents, negotiating with co-heirs, and handling estate distribution, I initiate and manage every necessary step on your behalf.

Having been raised bilingual, I speak English fluently and assist international clients with clarity and cultural understanding. Whether you're based in Germany or abroad, you will receive competent, personal and discreet legal support in a language you’re comfortable with.

Advice for Heirs – After the Death

Following the occurrence of an inheritance, I advise and represent you in determining the extent of your rights and obligations. The following topics are particularly important:

  • Proof of Inheritance: How do I prove my claim to inheritance? How and where do I obtain a certificate of inheritance? What must I consider when presenting a will?
  • Acceptance or Renunciation of the Inheritance: What must I consider when assessing the financial situation?
  • Compulsory Portion: Assertion or defence against claims to the compulsory portion.
  • Community of Heirs: Advice and representation in the settlement of complex estates.
  • Will: Interpretation and contestation of wills – what are the pitfalls?
  • Executor of the Will: Advice and enforcement of claims as an heir against the executor.
  • Preventing Forced Sales during Estate Settlement
  • Handling Legacies and Debts
  • Inheritance Law & Criminal Law: Forgery of wills, embezzlement, and fraud.
  • Inheritance Tax Law: How much inheritance tax must I pay?
  • Estate Mediation

Advice for Testators – Before the Death

To ensure that your succession is legally organised and that you can continue to live a self-determined life in old age or after strokes of fate, I am happy to advise you on the following topics:

  • Comprehensive and Individual Advice on Estate Planning: I help you to pass on your estate in an orderly manner.

What is the compulsory portion in German inheritance law?

The compulsory portion is a legal claim certain close relatives have to a share of the estate, even if they are disinherited by will.

How do I renounce an inheritance?

You must declare the renunciation to the probate court within six weeks of learning about the inheritance. If the deceased lived abroad or you were abroad, the deadline extends to six months.

Can I contest a will in Germany?

Yes, if there are grounds such as undue influence, formal errors, or lack of testamentary capacity. Legal advice is recommended.
